Battle of Champion Hill
HAD A GREAT TIME at the 163rd Anniversary of the BATTLE OF CHAMPION HILL living history event at the Coker House near Edwards, MS. Portraying Battery D of the 1st Illinois Artillery Regiment that fought in the battle, Turner’s Battery demonstrated loading and firing a 24lb field howitzer used in the conflict.

Check out my story, THE LAST HANGING TREE, in ROUGH COUNTRY Volume 1!

Like my 91 year old dad said, “Feels pretty good to get to run with the big dawgs, don’t it?”

WILL ROGERS MEDALLION CEREMONY
Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the 2025 Will Rogers Medallion Awards ceremony at the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel in Catoosa, OK. As Managing Editor of Saddlebag Dispatches magazine, I had the privilege of accepting three medals along with the authors who won medals in their respective categories.
Here’s what Casey Cowan had to say…
“That’s a wrap for the 2025 Will Rogers Medallion Awards! Roan & Weatherford Publishing Associates, Saddlebag Dispatches, and Young Dragons took home a combined six medallions, including four bronze, a silver, and a gold (and our buddy Reavis Wortham won silver in two different categories, too!).
To say I’m proud of these authors and their achievements would be the understatement of the year. There is no finer crew anywhere in this business. Here’s to all of our winners, all of our authors, and the hardworking crew behind the scene that helps make all of this possible.“

OZARK WRITER’S CONFERENCE
OCTOBER 18, 2025. I had a fantastic time being with WCCW members and good friends, and selling books at the Ozark Creative Writers Conference last weekend.
A good friend and faithful reader, Ron Zellner, shows off at my book table.
And totally unexpected, it was pretty humbling winning the Grand Showcase Award for my short story, Second Place is First Place Tonight. It was inspired by my high school English teacher, Patricia Stansbury.
Good times, great memories with wonderful people.
